About RockWoof
RockWoof turns public USGS mineral records into county guides for rockhounds. Site lists come from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System; fossil counts come from the Paleobiology Database; county outlines come from the US Census Bureau. Pages leave out sand, gravel, crushed stone, clay pits and unnamed sites. Counties with fewer than 5 remaining sites, and state mineral guides with fewer than 10 sites, do not get their own page.
Check access before you go. Most sites listed here are old mines, quarries or prospects, and many are on private land or active mining claims. Get the landowner's permission, check the rules of the agency that manages any public land, and never enter mine workings. Locations are approximate.
